Retinal Vein Occlusion (vein blockage) is a common cause of sudden and painless deterioration of the vision in people after the age of 60. It causes leakage into the retina and subsequently swelling as well as lack of oxygen
Branch retinal vein occlusion
is related to blockage of one of the four retinal veins, each of which drains approximately a quarter of the retina
Central retinal vein occlusion
occurs as a result of blockage of the main retinal vein, which drains blood from the whole retina and it is generally related to more severe loss of vision comparing to branch retinal vein occlusion
Causes
Several conditions could be related to Retinal Vein Occlusion: High blood pressure, High cholesterol, Glaucoma, Diabetes, Smoking, Certain rare blood disorders
Treatment
Intravitreal injections of anti-VEGF and steroid implants could be used to treat this condition
